Life at Maugel

Better and Different

Rohn.jpg

Funny when your worlds suddenly collide when you are least expecting it.

I have used this quote as the header of my blog since the very first day it launched in 2011. I often stumbled across quotes from Jim Rohn when looking for motivation through the years of struggles with my health and fitness. His words often propelled my writing, inspired me to blog about how I felt when I read them, and made me think about what motivates me. What is it exactly that I am looking for? How am going to ultimately reach my goal? Can I make it past the road blocks, struggles and doubts… and who are the people in my corner helping to encourage and support me along the way?

Maugel's Holiday Card: A Chronicle of Design

Posted by Robin Peters on Thu, Dec 22 , 2016

On the eve of Maugel's 25th annversary, we decided to go green with this year's holiday card and send it digitally — no easy task when you have 25 years of client mailing addresses to convert... But we did it, and luckily got through the spam filters and had an excellent response.

Each year, we spend a fair amount of time deliberating on which project to feature.  This year,  while looking through the file of Christmas Cards Past,  we thought about celebrating our 25th anniversary with a collage of prior-year designs, but in the end, we just couldn't ignore the beautiful Laddawn headquarter's expansion located in Devens, MA.  See 2016 Laddawn card here.

We still liked the collage idea, so why not do both?

–Happy Holidays.

Thanks very much for all your contributions to the Loaves & Fishes Backpack Drive.  Through your generous donations, we filled three boxes of supplies — the drive organizer was VERY appreciative.  Maugel Architects also gave a monetary donation. The Loaves & Fishes organizers will use the money to balance out the donations they received over the summer.

Maugel Heads to Beach for Summer Family Outing

Posted by Robin Peters on Wed, Jul 27 , 2016

Many thanks to Will and Cindy for hosting Maugel's summer family outing at their vacation home in Salisbury. It was a gorgeous day on the North Shore of Boston.  We had a great turnout and all the kids loved the beach; I don't think they stopped digging all day.  I personally took the opportunity to pass on some beloved beach toys that had been gathering dust in my garage for the past 7 years. The large dinosaur, shark, and turtle seemed to be everyone's favorites.

Maugel Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity

Posted by Robin Peters on Wed, Jul 27 , 2016

We had a great day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Ayer, MA. It's always great to help out our friends at Habitat. Last year we framed the house; this year we added the finishing touches.  Marcos, Mike, Riaan and Will volunteered to sprayfoam the attic. Bless their souls—it was hot! Who knew it was going to be the start of a long summer heatwave... Brent, Jen and I first inventoried the contents of the massive storage container. It was a lesson in perseverance but we got it done thanks to Brent doing most of the heavy lifting.  Kevin and Brent then got to work installing the mailbox and "Master Carpenter" Jen showed me how to use the power tools. (She is truly amazing.)

Maugel Women Compete in CrossFit Summer Showdown

Posted by Sarah Cormier on Mon, Jun 27 , 2016

When I started CrossFit in 2012, I was hooked the moment I realized I could compete. I was also attracted to the healthier lifestyle, but it was my competitive nature that really made CrossFit a perfect match for me.  If you've never experienced a CrossFit competition, it's really pretty amazing to watch.   Many people attend as spectators: they come to indulge in the delicious foods, such as the bun-free burgers or the pulled-pork and slaw plate, or to buy t-shirts with silly sayings like, “Squat like it's hot,” or “If I pass out, note my time.” But what will impress you the most is the tremendous athleticism and comraderie of the competitors.

The athletes range from seasoned competitors to novices who compete as individuals, pairs (both same sex and male/female) or in teams. The gym is filled with fellow competitors, spectators and judges--all cheering in support of one another. It's common for the athletes who finish first in the heat to turn around and cheer-on those still working. No one is left behind.

Thanks for Supporting Boston Children's Hospital

Posted by Maureen Hopper on Tue, Jun 21 , 2016

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your donations to Boston Children’s Hospital and for supporting us on this year’s Walk.  The day was beautiful and sunny, and we enjoyed the walk along the Esplanade lagoons and our favorite things: ducks, geese and the weeping willow trees.

We are so happy to have exceeded our goal of $1,700 and to have reached “Miracle Maker” status again for the 14th year!  We couldn’t have done it without your generosity.  Our deepest gratitude to you all for supporting this amazing institution in our own backyard that serves so many children and families in so many ways.

THANK YOU!

Maureen, Dave, Will & Andrew

Maugel Architects Rolls Out Red Carpet for Video Premiere

Posted by Robin Peters on Mon, Jun 20 , 2016

We had a great time at Maugel's Corporate Video Series Launch Party. The champagne and red carpet event (literally) was the culmination of many months of preparation, shooting and editing. What a team—your commitment and professionalism throughout the production was amazing, and it's reflected in the quality of the final videos.

A special thanks to videographer extraordinaire Matt Volpini—we couldn't have done it without you. You were a joy to work with and you made us all look great. And Maureen Hopper for planning the event and making it a special evening.

Maugel Artists Donate Work to IIDA Art Uncorked Charity

Posted by Robin Peters on Wed, Jun 01 , 2016

The 8th annual Art Uncorked fundraiser is being held on June 7th at District Hall on Northern Ave in Boston, MA.  The event is sponsored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and recognizes local artists within the design and architecture community. Proceeds benefit Raw Art Works, whose mission is to ignite the desire to create and the confidence to succeed in underserved youth. Learn more at: http://www.rawartworks.org/home.

This year, two of Maugel's artists donated their creative talents to create pieces for the event. The talented Colby Cavanagh donated a gorgeous collection of handcrafted jewelry and Maureen Hopper used her skills in photography to create beautiful cards with images of nature and local architecture.

Thanks, Colby and Maureen. We are proud to have such talented artists supporting such a great cause.

Join Us in Supporting the Walk for Boston Children's Hospital

Posted by Maureen Hopper on Tue, May 31 , 2016

We are happy to be walking on June 12th for the Walk for Boston Children's Hospital.  This is our 14th year supporting the fundraiser.  It’s still hard to believe that the first year we walked my son Andrew was only 5 months old and had fully recovered from heart surgery. Andrew had the surgery when he was 3 days old to repair a congenital heart defect: transposition of the great arteries.  We walk in support of the amazing cardiac department that detected, monitored, and repaired Andrew’s heart defect.  We are forever grateful for the research and patient care at Boston Children’s Hospital. Andrew is now a healthy 13-year-old who loves baseball and riding his bike and has no physical restrictions.

Good luck to the Muckin' A's Muckfest team this weekend. Thanksgiving Reflections and Gratitude

Posted by Sarah Cormier on Wed, Nov 25 , 2015

I spent the morning at the Loaves and Fishes food pantry yesterday. This was my 4th year volunteering for the Thanksgiving distribution, and it was clearly their most served. At the start of the morning, the Head Food Coordinator Paul Niemira spoke briefly to let us know the pantry had one of their busiest food drop offs in years. Initially, the pantry was low on turkeys and worried they wouldn't be able to serve all the families in need. Through the power of social media and word of mouth, 800 turkeys were donated and they actually had to TURN AWAY turkeys.  They are now all set for their Christmas distribution as well!

Maugel Annual Retreat 2015

Posted by Robin Peters on Tue, Oct 20 , 2015

We all headed down to Brewster for the Maugel Annual Retreat last week.  The weather was somewhat ominous early in the day—I secretly feared we'd all be struck down by a bolt of lightning while posing for our group photo (see dark, thunderous sky in photo).  But after a short downpour, the skies cleared and we had a beautiful day. The lobster and clam bake was amazing, and we had a lot of laughs learning something new about each of our colleagues (see related post Who Done It?).

Who Done It?

Posted by Robin Peters on Tue, Oct 20 , 2015

For those of you who like a little intrigue, we have a game for you...Who Done It? We all played the game at our annual retreat last week.  It was great fun and we had a lot of laughs trying to match the description to our fellow colleague. We always knew we had an interesting mix of personalities, but many of the matches surprised us. Mark Pelletier was the victor with the most correct answers. Was it due to his keen insight into human behavior? Or perhaps it was his superior observation skills? Who knows, but he beat us all by a wide margin. Congrats, Mark.  Not bad for a newcomer...
